Are Ghost Pepper Plants Poisonous

Ghost pepper fruit is used as food, but its extreme heat can cause significant irritation. Calling a pepper edible does not mean that eating a whole fruit, participating in a challenge or handling it without precautions is safe.

Why ghost peppers burn

Capsaicin is the compound responsible for pepper heat. It can irritate skin, eyes, the digestive tract and airways. Too much hot pepper can cause pain, vomiting or other symptoms. Individual tolerance varies, so there is no serving size in this article that should be treated as safe for everyone.

Handle the harvest carefully

  • Wear suitable protective gloves when cutting hot peppers.
  • Avoid touching your face or eyes.
  • Ventilate the work area when preparing or cooking them.
  • Keep hot peppers and prepared mixtures away from children and pets.

The fruit is the culinary part discussed here. Do not extend that statement to eating leaves, stems or ornamental plant material. Seed packets intended for planting are also not snack food.

Avoid extreme-heat challenges

Eating contests and highly concentrated pepper products can produce serious reactions. Growing a hot variety should be about the garden and appropriate culinary use, not testing how much pain someone can tolerate. Choose a milder pepper if intense heat does not suit your household.

When to get help
