Meet your five habaneros

Orange, Red and Yellow offer a colorful starting point for a habanero patch. Add Chocolate for fruity sweetness with an earthy, smoky character. Mini White rounds out the collection with small, creamy white fruit and a citrusy taste. Try individual varieties in salsa or marinades, or dry part of the harvest for seasoning.

Inside the collection

You receive one 300 mg packet of each variety, totaling five packets and 1.5 g of heirloom, non-GMO seed. Planting information stays with each labeled packet for easy reference. Five blank plant markers are included; write in the names as you sow to keep your young plants organized.

Plan your indoor start

Work backward from your area's last expected frost date. Chocolate needs an 8- to 12-week head start indoors, while the other four varieties should be started 8 to 10 weeks ahead. Sow at a depth of 1/4 inch and maintain warmth while the seeds germinate.

Once frost danger has passed, introduce the seedlings to outdoor conditions gradually. Choose a full-sun spot in a garden bed or an appropriately sized container, and check the individual packets for spacing. Keep the variety labels in place so you know what you are picking when harvest time arrives.
